To say that Joel Hunter, founder of Doggie Styles Grooming LCC, has a passion for dogs is an understatement. 15 years ago Joel started rescuing dogs as a hobby. That hobby grew into a devotion not matched by many. At any given time there are 20 or more dogs in the Hunter household. Joel finds some of the dogs, but most of them find him. Joel provides a safe home, food, shelter and love that many of the dogs would never receive if they ended up in a shelter. Joel specializes in “Special Needs” dogs – those dogs that need more attention than most, medically or physically.
Joel’s devotion to dogs has led him to positions at the Lakeland SPCA as a former board member and volunteer. During 2006-2007 Joel received the SPCA Volunteer of the Year award and even spent time rescuing animals in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
Joel’s idea to start a mobile pet grooming business started after graduating from the Tampa Bay Area Pet Grooming Academy and working in a local pet grooming shop. Joel saw the unhappiness in his canine clients when they were caged up all day and, due to liability issues, could not be walked or exercised. From that experience, Joel knew he had the answer. He jumped right into purchasing a dog grooming vehicle and taking the steps to open his own mobile pet grooming business. Joel came to the Polk County Small Business Development Center for questions concerning starting his business in Polk County and marketing his product. We were able to brainstorm on ways to bring his product into the Lakeland market and discussed developing his brand. Joel had this to say about his experience with Polk County SBDC: “Staff was tremendously helpful in answering financial, legal and marketing questions related to my specific business. The SBDC gave me the tools to make sound business decisions that have resulted in a successful business venture.”
Since starting his business in March, Joel has seen significant growth; so much so he has had to extend his hours to accommodate his growing number of clients.
